When you undergo wisdom tooth extractions, your body will begin a healing journey just like any other procedure, and the best way to support it is by getting plenty of rest! However, sleeping may be a little more challenging if you experience common symptoms such as swelling or tenderness after the procedure. How can you ensure a relaxing night’s sleep? You can follow your post-op instructions given by your dentist, but here are some tips that can help you rest a little easier.
Keep Your Head Elevated
After having your wisdom teeth removed, it’s best to keep your head elevated while lying down. Gravity helps move blood downward rather than allowing it to pool at the extraction site, which can lead to swelling and bruising. You can do this by sleeping with an extra pillow! Many people even find it more comfortable to relax on their side while lying in this position.
Create a Comfortable Environment Beforehand
A great way to ensure that you feel cozy while recovering is by setting up the environment around you. That means having a space that is free from distractions and perhaps keeping some of your favorite things nearby so you don’t have to go far for what you need.
Wherever you plan on lying down after the treatment, you can tidy up the space beforehand. This will allow you to come home to a clean and welcoming atmosphere. That way you don’t have to worry about anything aside from your healing. You can even keep the area dark and cool, which can encourage your relaxation. Just be sure to keep the floor free of any obstacles so you don’t accidentally trip over them. Also, you can have someone you trust help you get comfortable!
Manage Any Discomfort
As local anesthesia begins to wear off, you may start to feel some tenderness. It’s normal to experience discomfort after a wisdom tooth extraction, but you can manage it by taking prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Use them as directed to ensure their effectiveness.
You can also apply a cold compress in 10-minute intervals for the first 24 hours to help relieve some soreness and minimize swelling.
Reach Out to Your Dentist for Any Concerns
If you experience severe pain that limits your ability to sleep or have any other concerns, then reach out to your dentist! They can answer any questions you have and provide advice on ways to help you relax.
Just as with any other procedure, allowing yourself to rest is essential to a speedy recovery after wisdom tooth extractions. Even though you may have some trouble getting a good night’s sleep, following these tips can help you get enough of it afterward. In no time, you’ll be back to your routine, but without the discomfort your wisdom teeth were causing you!
