Reasons Why Surgical Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

There are a number of reasons why tooth extractions can be necessary. For example, if a tooth is decayed beyond repair or severely damaged, it will likely need to be removed. Often, general dentists can handle these types of extractions in their office.

However, you may need to come to our team if your extraction case is more complicated. Your dentist might refer you to us if:

  • You have impacted teeth. (These teeth are stuck beneath the gumline.)
  • You have teeth that are broken beneath the gumline.
  • You need to undergo several extractions at once.
  • You are undergoing immediate dental implant placement (receiving implants during the same appointment as your extractions).

The Process of Surgically Removing a Tooth

During a non-surgical extraction, a dentist essentially grips the tooth with forceps, wiggles it back and forth, and then carefully removes it from its socket. A surgical extraction is more complex.

We may need to create incisions in the gums to access the tooth and make sure we fully remove it. We may also have to break the tooth into pieces in order to cause as little damage to the surrounding jawbone as necessary. After the tooth is out, we carefully clean the socket and place any necessary sutures.

We will numb your mouth during your procedure, and we use sedation in some cases. We want you to be as comfortable as possible!

Most patients are back to feeling normal within 1 – 2 weeks of their surgical extraction procedure. In the meantime, you can facilitate your body’s healing process by taking some practical steps:

  • Get enough rest, and avoid strenuous exercise.
  • Take medications as advised by our team.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Do not drink through a straw.
  • Keep your head elevated when you lie down.
  • Periodically rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
  • Call our team if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments as recommended.

It is also important that you consider your tooth replacement options in a timely manner. Leaving the space empty could affect your bite and lead to oral health complications.
